Enjoy!

Jan 15.

David.

5 days in Nepal have flown by. We are here for only three weeks, a relatively short time, and are working as fast as we can to organize as many shows as possible.

After our arrival on Jan 10th, we took a couple of days to situate ourselves, have meetings with some NGOs and the Swiss Embassy, and find a few final props for our show.

One of the most important elements was constructing a 7×2.5 meter curtain to use as a backdrop. In a way it was our first direct contact with the Nepali culture – finding a little fabric shop, trying to communicate what we need, what colors, how large, the price, etc.

We found a small tailor shop to sew everything together for us, who told us it would be finished the next morning. At 9AM the next morning, Paul woke Céline and I with the surprise information that he had just organized a show for us at 11AM. Woooo! At 10:30 the backdrop was finished, we had a 20 minute hike up the hill which allowed us one last “verbal rehearsal”, 15 minutes to meet the directors and set up, and we were performing just after 11.

The school was in the suburbs of Kathmandu, for students of disadvantaged families. Most of the students are sponsored by NAG, a large orphanage located in the Tohka district where we have been lodging.

We had arrived just in time, the students were overly excited to see us, there was even a stage in the school yard, and Paul’s heart just about burst with emotion when the freshly made backdrop happened to match the size of the stage perfectly. So, things started off well.

Our second show of the day was in a very different context. We collaborated with the NGO Planète Enfants, who organized a show for us in a shelter for women who had been subject to human trafficking, and their children, maybe about 30 people in total. We installed ourselves in their little courtyard, and had a very calm and intimate show with an attentive audience.

While the two shows our first day had very different atmospheres, they were both marked by an astounding joy that came from each audience, an extremely warm reception from the very beginning, which can be a rare occurrence with the Western audiences we are used to.

Premiers jours

Celine.
